Engineering Design Challenge

In this lab experience, students identify a mixture of metal cations and nonmetal ions that are able to produce a crystal then construct a gel-based crystallization aparatus to slowly grow a high-quality crystal. Students will identify that their ability to successfully grow crystals is linked to the element’s position on the periodic table.
