Product Details

Radioactivity and half-life are sometimes difficult for students to understand. With this activity your students will readily grasp the general concepts of radioactivity and half-life determination. Using reusable, simulated plastic radioactive atoms (Simulats), each student conducts a series of activities which provides data that are graphed. By applying this information and the concepts developed to real-life problems, students can then calculate: the amount of carbon-14 found in an insect embedded in amber about 18,000 years ago, the amount of carbon-14 present in charcoal burned about 28,000 years ago, and the age of pollen from the amount of carbon-14 left. Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
