Product Details

Use the gas laws to learn the gas laws! The amount of gas needed to fill a container—whether it’s an airbag or an airship—can lead to a lot of interesting discussion. The purpose of this microscale experiment is to determine the volume of one mole of hydrogen gas at standard temperature and pressure. Students generate hydrogen by the reaction of a known quantity of magnesium with excess hydrochloric acid in an inverted graduated cylinder. After collecting the gas by water displacement and measuring its volume, students “combine” the gas laws to calculate the molar volume of hydrogen gas at STP. This microscale adaptation of a traditional large-scale lab is both fast and accurate—a winning combination of the gas laws! Includes reproducible student handouts, detailed background information, complete Teacher Notes with sample data and answers to all questions and all necessary chemicals and consumable supplies.

Complete for 30 students working in pairs. 10-mL graduated cylinders are required and available separately.

Performance Expectations

MS-PS1-1: Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures.
MS-PS1-3: Gather and make sense of information to describe that synthetic materials come from natural resources and impact society.
HS-PS1-3: Plan and conduct an investigation to gather evidence to compare the structure of substances at the bulk scale to infer the strength of electrical forces between particles.
HS-PS2-6: Communicate scientific and technical information about why the molecular-level structure is important in the functioning of designed materials.
