Help students easily make the connection between science and engineering with this introductory STEM activity! Students learn how to make a simple electric circuit and draw circuit diagrams. Next they apply their knowledge of series and parallel circuits to wire a duplex outlet with two lamps in which one lamp is controlled by a switch and the other is not. Success at each step encourages students to continue the design process at the next level. You will definitely see the “lightbulbs go on” as students engage in science and engineering practices to master a final circuit design challenge!

Complete for 10 student groups. 1.5-V D batteries and holders are required and available separately.
