Product Details

360Storyline is a collection of experiments that together let students engage in science in an authentic manner through the use of relevant phenomena. Each experiment in a 360Storyline builds on things learned in the preceding experiments until students develop a final, working explanation or model of the phenomenon. Every lab in any 360Storyline is completely editable and supported by videos and simulations.

Includes:

  • Access to digital content for 1 year
  • Lab supplies for each experiment for a single class of 30 students

Hot & Cold Processes
Lead students to a written understanding/working model of how energy in the form of heat is transferred during phase transitions, formation of solutions and chemical transformations. Some chemical reactions release heat while other reactions absorb heat from their surroundings and cause temperature decreases. These kinds of reactions are useful in different applications, such as hand warmers and flameless ration heaters and in refrigeration, respectively. Following the completion of these storylines, students will be empowered to examine the natural world and explain the scientific underpinnings of these and other technologies.

What Students Do

Lab 1—The Thermodynamics of Hand Warmers
Students investigate the energy changes that accompany the dissolution of common laboratory salts in water and apply the results to design a hand warmer that is reliable, safe and inexpensive.

Lab 2—Hess’s Law and the Combustion of a Metal
Students apply Hess’s law to indirectly determine how much heat energy is released during the combustion of magnesium in air.

Lab 3—The Heat of Melting Ice
Students carry out an investigation to determine how much energy is required to melt ice. They determine the energy required using calorimetry.

Lab 4—Enthalpy of a Neutralization Reaction
Students determine the enthalpy of a neutralization reaction involving hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide solutions and the enthalpy of neutralization of a HCl solution with solid NaOH. They discuss why these enthalpies are different.

About 360Storylines

360Storyline is a collection of experiments that together let students engage in science in an authentic manner through the use of relevant phenomena. Each experiment in a 360Storyline builds on things learned in the preceding experiments until students develop a final, working explanation or model of the phenomenon. Every lab in any 360Storyline is completely editable and supported by videos and simulations.

Students must drive the learning forward by developing procedures and asking questions. Each storyline is supported by editable documents that force students to think about how the data they collect relate to an individual experiment’s investigative phenomenon and how the data they collect in a series of labs relate to a broader, anchoring phenomenon.

Performance Expectations

HS-PS1-3: Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms.
HS-PS1-4: Develop a model to illustrate that the release or absorption of energy from a chemical reaction system depends upon the changes in total bond energy.
HS-PS1-7: Use mathematical representations to support the claim that atoms, and therefore mass, are conserved during a chemical reaction.
