Advanced DNA analysis techniques in an easy-to-use kit! Polymorphic DNA are chromosomal regions of DNA that vary widely between individuals. So-called Variable Number of Tandem Repeats (VNTR) regions vary in length from 15–70 base pairs and may be repeated anywhere from 5 to 100 times on a single chromosome. Since every individual has two copies of each chromosome—one from each parent—the VNTR region may be homozygous or heterozygous for both length and numbers of repeats. In this experiment, students isolate their own DNA for analysis, amplify the VNTR region using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and then separate the fragments of DNA using agarose gel electrophoresis. Students directly observe their own genotype and compare patterns or trends with those of their classmates. A complete review of modern biotechnology principles and procedures in one activity!
Complete for 30 students working in groups of three. A thermal cycler or three water baths, balance, microcentrifuge and electrophoresis equipment are required but not supplied with this kit.
