Diatoms possess chlorophylls a and c and accessory carotenoids that are responsible for the characteristic coloration. Food is stored as the polysaccharide chrysolaminarin. Diatoms can be either unicellular or chain-forming with siliceous cell walls composed of two overlapping plates.
