Immerse your students in the science practices with engaging laboratory activities and POGIL! Your students will practice important science skills while learning key concepts related to photosynthesis with this kit containing a demonstration, a POGIL activity and a lab activity. Students learn to predict outcomes by making models and learn key content through interpreting models and carrying out guided-inquiry lab activities. Complete the learning cycle with claims-evidence-reasoning style analysis prompts.

The demonstration activity uses chromatography to separate the pigments in spinach. Next, students complete the Photosynthesis—What’s in a Leaf? POGIL activity to build their understanding of the structure and function of leaves and, more specifically, chloroplasts. In the inquiry lab activity, students measure the rate of photosynthesis in algae using encapsulation of algae in sodium alginate spheres.

Complete for eight student groups. A Chlorella culture is required and must be purchased separately.
