Product Details

ELISA is an acronym for the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay—a widely used test to screen patients for allergies or certain diseases. In this interactive demonstration, you will guide your students through a realistic simulation of the steps involved in this important medical diagnostic test. Students will learn about how antigens are bound to a support material and will observe interactions of simulated primary and secondary antibodies with the antigen, and each other, to produce positive color tests. A great way to see how basic biology principles are applied for medical purposes! Lab activity is a chemical simulation—kit contains no actual blood, blood products, or any possible infectious agents. Includes enough materials to complete the demonstration as written seven times. A hot plate or microwave is required to prepare the agar for the demonstration but is not provided.

Performance Expectations

HS-LS1-1. Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the structure of DNA determines the structure of proteins, which carry out the essential functions of life through systems of specialized cells.
HS-LS1-2. Develop and use a model to illustrate the hierarchical organization of interacting systems that provide specific functions within multicellular organisms.
