The properties of solids and liquids provide a mirror for us to “see inside” the world of atoms and molecules—to understand the motion of molecules and to compare the interactions among different types of molecules. In this activity-stations lab, students will investigate energy and phase transitions, the nature and strength of intermolecular attractive forces, and the relationship between the properties of a metal and its crystalline structure. Each activity focuses on a different aspect of the properties of solids and liquids. The result is a comprehensive lab activity for this important unit in the chemistry curriculum. • Phase Change—Cooling Curve • Intermolecular Forces • Vaporization • Properties of Metals Four mini-lab activities are set up around the classroom. Each activity is designed to take about 10 minutes to complete, with student groups rotating through the four stations. Teacher Notes with sample data, extensive background material, reproducible student handouts, and all chemicals and consumables needed to perform all the activities are supplied. Complete for 8 student groups. Perform this experiment in a fume hood or well-ventilated lab.
