When a charged particle moves through a magnetic field, it is affected by an electromagnetic force called the Lorentz force. When the velocity of the particle is perpendicular to the magnetic field, the particle follows a circular trajectory. When the velocity is at an angle, the particle follows a helix trajectory. This abstract concept is easy to see and understand with the unique Lorentz Force Demonstrator. This classic “fine beam tube” allows for quantitative observations of electron beam properties. A sharply focused electron beam is projected into a vacuum containing a trace of inert gas. Small deflector plates can be manipulated to change the direction of the electron beam through the magnetic field.
