Rock Identification Activities

Rock identification activities generally involve handling igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic samples, along with magnifiers, water, or simple tools. Although the risks are low, specimens may have rough or sharp edges that can cut skin, and some rocks (such as pumice, shale, or coal) may shed small fragments. To minimize hazards, remind students to handle rocks carefully, avoid rubbing samples together, and wash hands thoroughly after the activity to remove dust or mineral residue.
