Immediately call a POISON CENTER or physician (P310). If inhaled: Remove victim to fresh air in a position comfortable for breathing (P304+P340). If in eyes: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do so. Continue rinsing (P305+P351+P338). If on skin: Brush off loose particles from skin (P335). Immediately remove all contaminated clothing. Rinse skin with water (P303+P361+P353). Wash contaminated clothing before reuse (P363). If swallowed: Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting (P301+P330+P331).
Flammable solid. Dangerous fire risk; reacts violently with moisture evolving much heat, spattering and flammable hydrogen gas. Very difficult to extinguish a potassium fire. In case of fire: Use Class D, Met-L-X, or dry sand as a fire extinguisher. Avoid water contact, violent reaction with water.
NFPA Code
H-3 F-3 R-2 No Water
Restrict unprotected personnel from area. Remove all ignition sources and water. Coat with mineral oil, carefully pick up and place in a bottle with clean, dry mineral oil. Ventilate area and wash spill site after material pickup is complete. See Sections 8 and 13 for further information.
Flinn Suggested Chemical Storage Pattern: Inorganic #1. Store with metals and metal hydrides. Store under oil in a PVC coated glass bottle in a Flinn Chem-Saf™ can. Keep away from water and handle with dry utensils.
Wear protective gloves, protective clothing, and eye protection (P280). Wash hands thoroughly after handling (P264).
Soft, silvery metal when fresh. Older potassium may be covered with a soft, spongy coating which could be an explosive peroxide. Soluble: Do not attempt to place in solution.
