Heat up five different metal cylinders to exactly the same temperature, add each to a precise amount of water at known temperature and observe the water temperature change. What variation! Why? Students perform a lab activity and calculate the specific heat of each metal specimen. Use this set to aid in the discussion of calorimetry, specific heat and heat capacity. Instructions includes background, lab activity procedure, tips, and sample problems. Five cylinders—aluminum, copper, steel, tin and zinc, each with the same 58-g mass and 19-mm diameter—are included in the set.
