In this lab experience, students carry out greener versions of classic chemistry labs: an exploration of hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces, a precipitation reaction and the use of a catalyst to increase the rate of a redox reaction. Editable, differentiated instructions range from a time-sensitive prescriptive lab to full open inquiry, and robust online videos and content—including a virtual reality (VR) simulation—help students prepare for and better understand the labs they’re conducting.

360Science™: Making the Chemistry Lab Greener
Concepts: Green chemistry, precipitation reactions, redox reactions, catalysis
Outcomes: Students will design and conduct greener versions of classic chemistry labs. In one of the experiments, they will develop a demonstration of the properties of hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces; they will show that regular paper is hydrophilic whereas applying a coating of wax-based material to a paper strip will make its surface hydrophobic (water repellent). This experiment utilizes recyclable, nontoxic materials. In a second experiment, students will figure out how to cause the precipitation of BiOCl by adding water to a Bi(NO3)3 + HCl solution, and they will prove that this precipitation can be reversed by adding more HCl to the mixture. This reaction is a greener alternative to the classic precipitation of toxic solids like silver chloride (AgCl). In a third experiment, students will demonstrate the effect of copper(II) sulfate as a catalyst in the reaction between dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) and zinc metal, which generates hydrogen gas. They will argue about the benefits of using a catalyst to maximize the rate and output of a chemical reaction.
