California NGSS

The Next Generation Science Standards* provide a new vision for science education in the United States, fulfilling the need to educate our students to be scientifically literate.

These standards were developed by a team of experts and stakeholders in science and engineering in K-12, higher education, and industry. They have been internationally benchmarked against countries whose students excel in science and math.

The NGSS* will better prepare students to succeed in college and careers, enabling employers to hire workers with strong science-based knowledge and skills.

California adopted the Next Generation Science Standards* in the fall of 2013 and approved a new science framework in November of 2016.

The science framework encourages a new teacher-student dynamic with the teacher becoming more of a facilitator, asking questions and encouraging discovery. Students conduct experiments and lead the scientific inquiry.

The California Science Teachers Association has developed recommended core inventory lists to support this new standards-based instruction. To make your life in the classroom easier, Flinn Scientific has correlated all of these lists to our products and created easy-to-use laboratory equipment purchase guides. All lists below are available for download as either a PDF document or an interactive Excel file.
