In this lab experience, students investigate the natural radiation around them and measure radioactivity of potassium-40, one of the most abundant minerals on Earth. A radiation monitor is needed (TC1618). Editable, differentiated instructions range from a time-sensitive prescriptive lab to full open inquiry, and robust online videos and content—including a virtual reality (VR) simulation—help students prepare for and better understand the labs they’re conducting.

Concepts:
Radioactivity, half-life, nuclear decay
Outcomes: Students will find the amount of potassium chloride used for their measurements. This will help them understand that the radioactivity of an element does not depend on the chemical nature or form of the element. Radioactivity is a nuclear rather than a chemical process. Since potassium-40 is weakly radioactive, the detector has to be pretty close to the sample to measure above background radiation levels. While it is beta radiation it is very weak. This will help drive the point home to students that dose is what makes chemicals dangerous.
