In this lab experience, students observe, count and quantify the stomata, which regulate transpiration. Pooling the class data, students determine the average number of stomata per square millimeter of the plant species being tested. Students also determine the rate of water loss by calculating the percent mass change of whole plants over the span of four days. Editable, differentiated instructions range from a time-sensitive prescriptive lab to full open inquiry, and robust online videos and content—including a virtual reality (VR) simulation—help students prepare for and better understand the labs they’re conducting.

Transpiration, adhesion, cohesion, osmotic potential, turgor/pressure potential 
Outcomes: Students will strengthen microscope skills, calculate the number of stomata by determining the field of view size, and calculate the surface area of a full leaf. Students will discover that environmental conditions can directly impact the rate of transpiration.
