In this lab experience, students draw two ellipses with different eccentricities to model the shape of planetary orbits. They determine the eccentricity of each ellipse by dividing the distance between the foci by the length of the major axis. In addition, they explore the geometry of ellipses, and the implications of this geometry on the trajectory of the planets around the sun. Editable, differentiated instructions range from a time-sensitive prescriptive lab to full open inquiry, and robust online videos and content help students prepare for and better understand the labs they’re conducting.

Our 1-year option provides access to all digital content for one year plus lab supplies for a single class of 30 students. Our 3-year option extends access to digital content to three years at a discount.
