360Science™: Nuclear Radiation and Shielding

In this lab, students are investigating alpha radiation and what material is best for shielding it. A radiation monitor is used to measure the activity of the sample. Three shielding materials are investigated: paper, aluminum and lead. Students will also measure the background radiation before measuring the alpha emitting sample. This will help them compare the strength of alpha radiation versus the background radiation we experience every day.
