Promote success in one 50-minute wet lab period with this guided-inquiry Acid–Base Titration Curves activity! Present different student groups with one of four titration curve plots to reproduce on lab day. Completion of a thorough homework assignment prior to lab promotes conceptual understanding of acids and bases and the experimental design of a classic titration. Students are challenged to interpret particulate model diagrams, extrapolate from a titration curve plot, perform pertinent calculations and ultimately write their very own procedure. Students take ownership of selecting the correct chemicals—an acid, a base and an indicator—to correctly reproduce the titration curve. They’ll love the challenge, and you’ll love the new spin on the classic titration experiment.
