With this FlinnEverydayScience™ lab, build a model of red blood cells based on blood type. Then explore the genetics of blood types with Punnett squares and solve a paternity problem.
This item can only be shipped to schools, museums and science centers
Students create models of red blood cells, and the possible antigens present on the surface for the eight blood types (Type O+, O-, A+, A-, B+, B-, AB+, and AB-). They then identify the possible genotypes for each blood type. Using Punnett squares they determine the probability of a child having a certain blood type based on the blood types of the parents. Lastly, they will use their understanding of blood types and inheritance patterns to determine the possible father of a child based on the child’s and parents’ blood types. Includes access to pre-lab videos, editable lab instructions, downloadable student handouts, detailed background information, safety information, teacher notes with answers to all questions and sample data, and teaching and lab tips.
