Mapping Earthquakes and Volcanoes—Student Activity Kit
An active-learning mapping activity that investigates the geological connection between earthquakes and volcanoes. Students complete a puzzle of the Earth to learn the location of the Earth’s major tectonic plates. Then students identify the locations of recent earthquakes and volcanoes. By comparing the marked locations on the chart with their puzzles, students are able to determine the geologic relationship. Complete for 30 students working in pairs. AP6881 I $38.60
    Physical and Chemical Properties
of Soil—Student Laboratory Kit
Explore how physical and chemical properties impact soil quality. First, students determine soil texture—the relative amounts of sand,
silt and clay—by measuring the amount of each that settles out of a soil “solution” after specific time intervals. Then they analyze the chemical properties by measuring the pH and testing for the presence of essential macronu- trients, nitrate and phosphate ions.

    Specific Heat and Climate—
Student Laboratory Kit
Students carry out a controlled experiment
to determine how specific heat affects the temperature of geological materials and influ- ences climate. Students measure temperature versus time data for four materials and graph the results. When exposed to the same amount of light for the same amount of time, these four materials have very different final temperatures. The data and graphical analysis are used for discussions about urban heat islands, thermal pollution and contemporary climate issues. Complete for 30 students working in groups of three.
Exploring Groundwater—Activity-Stations Kit
Explore important concepts related to groundwater! Three “mini-lab“ activities each focusing on a specific groundwater-related principle or topic are included: Permeability and Porosity, Groundwater Simulation Model and Permeable Reactive Barriers. Each activity is a self-con- tained unit, and student groups may rotate through the stations in any order. Teacher Notes with sample data, background information, reproducible student handouts and all chemicals and consumables are supplied. Complete for six student groups.
