Let’s answer some questions concerning wooden and metal flammables cabinets:
 Concerns
   Wooden Flammables Cabinets
   Metal Flammables Cabinets
Protection from the Flames of a Fire
Yes, wood burns, but a cabinet constructed with 1" plywood using specifications developed by both OSHA and the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) will meet all the requirements for a flammables cabinet. The question is how long will the wooden cabinet protect the materials inside from flame. The answer is just as long or longer than a metal flammables cabinet.
Metal does not burn but it will act as an oven in that the cabinet contents will be heated.
Possible Structural Damage Sustained in a Fire
Wooden flammables cabinets do not distort or bend when involved in a fire. The only way for the fire to get through is to burn all the way through the wood.
The doors of metal flammables cabinets, when subjected to flame and heat, will sometimes bend and distort, thus expos- ing the internal cabinet contents to flame. This is a common problem.
Protection from the High Temperature of a Fire
A wooden flammables cabinet is a thermal insulator. The rapid rise in temperature due to a fire will have little impact on the inside temperature of the cabinet, thus protecting the chemical bottles from the high temperature of a fire.
Metal is a heat conductor. Metal flammables cabinets can and will pass the rapid rise in temperature on to the chemical bottles in the cabinet. Glass bottles in a metal flammables cabinet have been known to break, releasing their vapors and liquids. Metal containers can pop their lids due to high temperatures experienced during a fire. Metal cabinets become ovens when involved in a fire.
 Protection from Corrosive Environment
A wooden flammables cabinet will not rust. All metal hardware components are corrosion resistant.
Many flammable cabinets are located near the acid cabinet or in a poorly ventilated store room. A metal flammables cabinet may begin to rust within the first year even if no corrosives are stored in it.
