Chemicals
NITRIC ACID continued
 HAZARD ALERT: Corrosive; strong oxidant; toxic by inhalation and ingestion; avoid contact with acetic acid and readily oxidized substances. Concentrated nitric acid will attack and destroy metals and most plastics; never store concentrated nitric acid in a plastic bottle. TLV 5.2 mg/m3.
Storage: In a separate, isolated portion of your acid cabinet. Never store with acetic acid. If an acid cabinet is not available, store in a Flinn Saf-CubeTM.
Disposal: #24b
Shelf Life: When this substance is stored for a long period, it gradu- ally destroys the cap. Do not interchange another cap except one designated by its color code (red). Shelf life of nitric acid is good except for this bottle cap problem. Product may turn yellow due to the release of nitrogen dioxide on exposure to light. This yel- low color does not affect the product’s usefulness in the teaching laboratory.
Soluble: Miscible with water; considerable heat is released.
Color and Odor: Colorless liquid with a suffocating, unique odor. CAS No. 7697-37-2
Safety Purchase Suggestion: Buy and store only small package sizes and small quantities. For safety reasons, Flinn offers larger sizes of nitric acid and other hazardous substances in PVC-coated bottles. We have attempted to price the products in these safer containers as low as possible.
*Nitric acid is exactly as described under catalog number N0017 but in a PVC-coated bottle. In the event of breakage, acid and glass shards are safely retained in a PVC outer envelope. Plas-PakTM is a safer package choice.

 Hood Audit and Smoke Generator
The smoke generator (see page 129) should be placed at or near the center of the internal working space of the hood. With the hood operating and the smoke generator ignited, the smoke should move from immediately in front of the sash directly up and out of the hood chamber, allowing no spots of turbulence or dead space. The sash should be placed at the position where it provides the most efficient draft and then be labeled.
