Petroleum Ether
 HAZARD ALERT: Flammable liquid; dangerous fire risk.
Storage: Organic #3 in a dedicated flammables cabinet. If a flam- mables cabinet is not available store in a Flinn Saf-Stor TM Can. Disposal: #18b
Shelf Life: Indefinite if stored safely.
Soluble: Miscible with many organic solvents; insoluble in water. Color and Odor: Colorless liquid with natural gas-like odor.
CAS No. 8032-32-4
Technical Note: Technically the name petroleum ether is a misno- mer. In the chemical sense it is not an ether, but consists chiefly of low boiling fractions (B.P. 30 – 60 °C) of petroleum, mostly pentanes and hexanes. Names like benzin and naphtha are synony- mous to petroleum ether, which is not a peroxidizable substance like ethyl ether.
1,10-Phenanthroline
 HAZARD ALERT: Highly toxic by ingestion; LD50 132 mg/kg. Storage: Organic #2
Disposal: #5
Shelf Life: Poor; hygroscopic.
Soluble: Alcohol; slightly in water.
Color and Odor: White, odorless solid.
CAS No. 5144-89-8
Technical Note: Forms a complex with iron(II) or ferrous ions called ferroin (see page 346), which is used as an indicator in redox systems.
1,10-Phenanthroline Solution
For hazard alert, storage, disposal, etc., see 1,10-Phenanthroline, P0155.
Color and Odor: Colorless, odorless liquid.
Phenol
 HAZARD ALERT: Toxic by ingestion, inhalation, and skin absorption. Strong skin irritant; LD50 317 mg/kg. TLV 19 mg/m3.
SPECIAL HAZARD ALERT: Phenol in contact with more than approximately 100 square inches of skin (10" x 10") is absorbed
