Crucible, Gooch, Borosilicate Glass with Fritted Disc

Clean Soiled Crucibles
This is frequently a difficult task. Whenever possible, try to get badly soiled crucibles into water as soon as possible (after they have cooled, of course). We recommend trying our cleaner “Flinn-It” on page 66. This cleaner may do the job. Allow the porcelain crucibles with carbon deposits to soak in this mixture for at least 8 hours. Do not allow this mixture to remain in contact with glass for more than a few minutes.
The black residue that is sometimes present in a porcelain crucible after the high-temperature combustion of magnesium experiment is difficult to remove. However, this residue will not affect future use of the crucible. The residue is a nonreactive complex inorganic compound composed of Mg and the elements found in porcelain (Al and O). Those wishing to avoid “dirty” crucibles may prefer our stainless steel crucibles (Catalog No. AP7615).
