Students will be amazed as they extract and isolate DNA from fruit! The “spooled” DNA obtained in this manner is identified using electrophore- sis, the most common technique in biotechnology. Visible bands appear as the DNA fragments run through the “molecular maze” in the presence of an electric field. Kit includes dried fruit and all solutions needed for students to isolate DNA, as well as agarose, buffer, and dyes for electro- phoresis. Dried fruit is a safe, convenient source of DNA. Purified fish DNA added to the isolated fruit DNA for electrophoresis ensures that DNA bands will always be visible. Student success every time!

DNA Forensics—Student Laboratory Kit

nology to solve a crime by analyzing DNA samples collected at the “crime scene.” The DNA samples are run through a gel electrophoresis “maze” and distinct bands separate—clearly leading to the guilty person. Use this nonviolent scenario to teach your students about DNA electrophoresis! Includes complete instructions, plus a crime report, and all the materials necessary to run six gels.

DNA Fingerprinting 1
DNA fingerprinting has received a lot of attention as a forensic investi- gative tool. Already a deciding factor in numerous criminal cases, this technique can be effectively demonstrated. This laboratory will illus- trate the basic principles of DNA fingerprinting, with the results being analyzed and discussed in terms of a hypothetical criminal case. DNA samples from two suspects, each cleaved with two different restriction enzymes, are electrophoresed on a gel along with samples taken from the crime scene. Analysis will determine the guilty party.
Requires electrophoresis apparatus, balance, power and heat supply and white light vixualization system. Components need refrigeration. Enough materials for 4–6 runs. DNA source is Lambda phage.*
DNA Paternity Testing—
Student Laboratory Kit
