  Digestive Enzymes at Work—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Explore the roles of enzymes and the chemical reactions involved in the human digestive system. The lab starts with amylase, which catalyzes the initial breakdown of starch molecules in the mouth. Students then observe the reaction of the enzyme pepsin with protein molecules in an acid environment, just like in the stomach. Finally, students analyze the “digestion” of milk by lipase, which catalyzed the hydrolysis of milk fat into fatty acids in the small intestine. Iodine, Benedict’s reagent, biuret test solution, and litmus are included in the kit, along with the enzymes to test for the end products of digestion.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs. Boiling water baths are required for the Benedict’s test.
Kidney Function Model—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Create a functioning model of the kidney and observe how the model filters out wastes from simulated blood! Students build a model of the nephron, the filtering unit of the kidney, and investigate its ability to filter various substances out of simulated blood. The simulated urine is then analyzed using common urinalysis tests for color, clarity, pH, salt crystals, and glucose. The results help students understand the role of the kidneys in maintaining chemical balance in the body, and also teach them about the importance of urinalysis as a vital tool in diagnosing physiological health conditions. Includes reproducible student handouts, complete Instructor Notes and all necessary chemi- cals and equipment.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
Simulated Urinalysis—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Safely learn the basics of urinalysis using simulated urine samples. No more collecting and handling real urine and all the potential problems associated with real body fluids in your laboratory. Students test five different simulated urine samples for five different common urinalysis factors. Results are then compared. Preliminary indications about the health of the tested individuals are explored.
Complete for 30 students working pairs. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs. One urine hydrometer is included in the kit and must be shared by the class. No actual body fluids are included in the kit.
