Classification and Phylogenetic

Caminalcules are attention-getting, imaginary organisms created by the late Joseph Camin. The unique organisms, with their strange anatomy, have stimulated a series of clever activities related to classification and phylogenetic relationships. First, students develop a defensible classifica- tion scheme for “living” caminalcules. During this preliminary process they will come to realize that classification is not an absolute science, and disagreements can occur. Next students examine “fossil” caminalcules and create a phylogenetic tree based on their own defensible pattern of classification. These imaginary organisms will put fun into your teaching of classification while providing a great deal of thinking in the process.

Fun with Classification—Super Value Kit

What do biologists, librarians and even store owners have in common? All of them need to group objects together for convenience, to classify material! Keeping track of more than 2.5 million living organisms is a daunting task for biologists—and for students. In this colorful and fun, hands-on activity, students work together in groups to identify the unique, distinguishing features of rubber fishing lures and to develop their own dichotomous keys for classifying lures. Students then exchange their keys and fishing lures with other groups to see if they can “follow along” and classify the lures. This is a terrific, inquiry- based introduction to classification. Includes detailed instructions, student worksheets and ten sets of fishing lures with 10 different lures in each—100 lures total!

Go Extinct! Board Game
Go Extinct! is Go Fish evolved! Take on the role of a scientist compet- ing to collect sets of closely related animals—like lions and horses, snakes and lizards or stegosauruses and apatosauruses. Using an evolu- tionary tree, ask other players for animal cards to complete and declare sets. Game includes 54 beautifully illustrated cards, a rule set and a large game board with a stylized yet accurate evolutionary tree used for reference during play. We had a blast playing this game, so we know it is sure to be a hit in your classroom!
