Environmental Science—Soil Kits
Biology and Chemistry of Soil—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
The soil under our feet is a wonderful place to explore the living world. Using ordinary soil samples and easy-to-follow techniques, students are able to conduct a thorough evaluation of the soil in your area. Students will identify the types of microorganisms in their soil and perform pH, nitrate, and phosphates tests. Conclusions will then be made concern- ing the soil’s ability to support growth. Detailed Instructor’s Notes and reproducible student worksheets are included.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
Garden Soil Analysis Kit
Our simple-to-use soil test kit measures concentration levels of nitro- gen, phosphorus and potassium (15 tests each). A pH indicator and color chart are used to determine soil pH levels (30 tests for each). Step-by-step instructions allow your students to easily conduct and understand the test procedures performed. A garden guide manual and soil handbook are included.
How Soil Is Formed—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Soil is the bridge between the living and non-living world. Introduce students to how soil is formed. Students will perform a series of hands- on experiments to gain an understanding of the chemical, physical, and organic processes involved in rock and soil formation. Students will investigate the results of erosion, glacial changes, ice expansion, chemical processes and much more.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
Lead in Soil—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Get the attention of this eco-minded generation as
they discover that “healthy-looking” soil can contain traces of a toxic metal remaining decades after initial contamination. Students run an aqueous extraction on a dark, rich soil only to find that it may contain detectable levels of lead. Experiment provides a realistic analysis of contaminated soil. The background section describes the toxicology of lead on humans and also gives information about historical sources of lead contamination, such as lead-based paint, leaded gasoline, and foundry deposits. All of these processes have contributed to the accu- mulation of this stable element in the surrounding soil. Being able to analyze lead and other elements is key to solving environmental issues. Empower the next generation to become scientists and solve these problems!
Complete for 30 students working pairs. A 0.1-g precision balance and other common laboratory supplies are required and available separately.
