Soil Contamination—
Forensics Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
The soil in and around the Walker quarry has become contaminated! It is up to your students—as forensic scientists—to perform tests and use problem-solving skills to determine who is responsible for the contamination. Students will perform chlorine, iron and pH tests on samples from various locations of the quarry to solve the mystery. A fun activity that will surely peak your students’ interest. Kit includes multiple scenarios to select from.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
Soil Test Kit—Rapitest®
This self-contained kit will enable you and your students to quickly assess soil pH and the relative amount of three key elements—nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (potash). Tests are as simple as dropping the contents of a capsule into the sample and comparing the resulting color to a set of standards. The remarkably extensive instructions detail how to conduct the tests, when to conduct the tests, preferred pH ranges for hundreds of plants and how to select and apply the proper fertilizers. Each test can be conducted 10 times. A refill kit containing an addi- tional 10 capsules for each of the four tests is offered separately.
Topsoil Tour
The seven units of the Topsoil Tour enable students to examine, discover, and compare the physical and chemical properties of soil. Each student conducts tests for pH, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and soil texture using safe, simple reagent tablets. Each unit includes lecture materials, reproducible handouts, test procedures, record sheets, and summary games and puzzles. A comprehensive, fun and educational introduction to soil science. Materials supplied for up to 50 students working individually.
