Exploring Groundwater—
Activity-Stations Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Explore important concepts related to groundwater using this activity- stations lab kit! Three “mini-lab” activities, each focusing on a specific groundwater-related principle or topic, are included:
• Permeability and Porosity—Students perform a measurement lab activity to determine and calculate the percent porosity and perme- ability of different soil samples.
• Groundwater Simulation Model—Students create and test a ground- water simulation model. Model features include confined aquifers, wells and both point and non-point pollution sources.
• Permeable Reactive Barriers—Students will observe the potential of using metallic iron to clean up contaminated groundwater via an oxidation–reduction reaction.
Each activity is a self-contained unit, and student groups may rotate
through the stations in any order. Instructor’s Notes with complete sample data, comprehensive background information, reproducible student handouts and all chemicals and consumables needed to perform the activities are supplied. Activity-stations lab format lets you do more labs in less time!
Complete for six student groups.
Forensic Groundwater Contamination—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
A rancher drills a well on the outskirts of a rural community and submits a sample for analysis. A potentially serious pollutant is found. The student’s assignment is to determine the extent of the pollutant’s spread and to pinpoint its source so the community can assess and remedy the problem. In the process the students will select test well sites, “analyze” samples from the selected wells, map the extent and concentration levels of the pollutant, and submit proposals for address- ing the problem.
Complete for 30 students working in groups of three.
Lead in Water—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Challenge your students to understand the poten-
tial harm that lead presents to their lives and the environment. Lead is a naturally occurring stable element that accumulates in soil and water, as well as in the tissues of the plants and animals that grow in contaminated areas. In this hands-on lab activity, students discover how natural and industrial processes ultimately affect human health by testing simulated environmental water samples for the presence of lead. The results illustrate a toxic variation of a nutrient cycle. The cycling of environmental pollutants in the biosphere is a new and important concept for students who are growing up in an eco-conscious society.
Complete for 30 students working individually. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working individually. A 0.1-g preci- sion balance and other common laboratory supplies are required but not provided.
