Buffering Lakes and Streams—
Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
People are encouraged to “go green” and reduce environmental pollut- ants that cause acid rain or other hazards. Is society alone in fighting these battles? Absolutely not—nature can help! This demonstration uses marble chips and dilute sulfuric acid solution with universal indi- cator to show how carbonate-rich soils neutralize acid rain. Students observe a rainbow spectrum of color changes as the acid rain solution slowly filters through the calcium carbonate “rocks” and is neutralized. The universal indicator color changes from red in acid to blue-green color, indicating that the solution has become more neutral. The result- ing “lake” or filtrate will also neutralize additional acid rain, indicating that a buffer is formed. Includes detailed discussion section, reproduc- ible student worksheets and Teacher Notes.
Concepts: Acid rain, buffers, water quality, acid–base indicators. Time Required: 20 minutes
Materials Provided: Marble chips, sulfuric acid, universal indicator solution, glass demonstration tube, cotton balls, Beral-type pipets, rubber stoppers.
Environmental Pollution and Lichens—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Lichens are a terrific indicator to monitor environmental pollution. In this kit, students will discover the value of lichens as living indica- tors of environmental quality. Students will perform experiments to see how different given pollution samples affect lichens. Pollution data will be analyzed and compared. Instructor’s Notes, reproduc- ible student handouts, lichens, and simulated pollution samples are provided.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
Chemical Pollution in Water—
A Qualitative Ion Test Super Value Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Water is an essential resource to humans. When trace amounts of certain chemicals enter our water supply, serious health problems may occur. In this activity, students will test for the presence of several types of simulated polluting chemical ions, including chlorides, chromates, iron, lead, phosphates and sulfates. Students will also write chemical equations and test for unknown contaminating ions. Includes a detailed background section on sources and effects of water pollution, repro- ducible student data handouts, complete instructor’s notes with sample data and answers and enough chemicals needed to perform 300 tests for each ion. Do not use with real water samples.
Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs. Fifteen reusable 24-well reaction plates are recommended and available separately.
