Antibiotic Sensitivity Testing—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: Don Gage
John Stark High School, Weare, NH
“Phobic” about working with bacteria? This instructor-designed and student-tested kit starts with the basics and provides a significant micro- biology laboratory experience that is both stimulating and fun . The purpose of the lab is to expose students to the fundamental procedures used by microbiologists to inoculate, culture, and analyze bacterial cultures . After learning basic bacteriological techniques, students deter- mine whether a culture of E . coli is resistant, intermediately sensitive or sensitive to a series of five antibiotics . These are the same techniques originally used in hospital laboratories to determine the most effective treatment for infections .
Sufficient nutrient agar, sterile Petri dishes, sterile applicator swabs, and antibiotic sensitivity disks are provided for 100 students working in pairs. An autoclave or pressure cooker and a live culture of E. coli are required and available separately.
Biofilms—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Introduce students to the study of biofilms, which
has become a major area of research in recent years . “Slime cities” thrive wherever there is water—in laundry rooms, on contact lenses and even teeth . These slimy surfaces are known as biofilms . Understanding biofilms and developing ways to control them have enormous economic and health implications . In this hands-on kit, students treat microscope slides with different substances and immerse the slides into biofilm- rich media . The coated slides are then removed, stained and examined under a microscope to detect the presence of biofilm growth . The effect of different treatments on the growth of biofilms can then be compared and contrasted . Includes detailed instructions, extensive background and valuable Instructor’s Notes .
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
Bacterial Pollution (Coliform)—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students will determine the presence or absence of coliform bacteria (indicative of the presence of untreated sewage and potentially patho- genic bacteria) in water supplies . By observing a dramatic color change that occurs in a lactose broth medium, students will determine whether coliforms are present . Kit includes 25 tubes of lactose broth medium with chlorophenol red indicator, sterile transfer pipets and instructions .
Complete for 25 student tests. Super Value Kit is complete for 75 student tests.
