A single thread from the perpetrator’s clothing can be enough to do the trick! Students perform burn and microscopy analysis on six known fiber types and compare their results to the fiber found at the crime scene. But that’s not all! Once the evidence fiber is identified, students determine if it matches a garment disposed of across town by a suspi- cious-looking man—bringing them one step closer to determining the identity of the criminal in the Flinn Forensic Files Series!

What better way to identify a suspect than by using classic fingerprint- ing! When two passports are stolen from James and Carly Frank’s home, the police have their work cut out for them. Since the last time the Franks had seen their passports, they had several contractors in their home. Any one of them could have snuck into the bedroom and taken the passports. Students begin the activity by taking and analyzing their own fingerprints—comparing loops, whorls and arches. Next it is time for students to step up and analyze the prints of 10 contractors and compare them to those lifted from the dresser drawer where the Franks kept their passports. Students bring police one step closer to identifying the passport thieves!

Footwear Evidence

Capture the most intricate details of footwear impressions using the BioFoam® impression system! A criminal must enter and exit a crime scene on foot at some point, even if only for a short distance. Students will enjoy the process of making permanent castings using their own footwear. They then analyze each other’s work and compare those results to the suspect’s footprint from the crime scene to determine a possible match, just like real-world investigators in a crime lab!
The classroom set, AP7752, is complete for eight student groups. AP7749 serves as an individual lab kit or demonstration.
