Flinn Forensic FilesTM
Can your students solve the mystery of the Flinn Forensic FilesTM? These student laboratory kits are a great introduction to a variety of forensic science investigative techniques. The wide array of topics include fingerprint analysis, ink chromatography, fiber analysis, footwear impressions, ballistics and DNA investigations.
Each kit contains a case background and a technical background. The detailed case backgrounds provide the interesting backstory of a fictional crime to give students an example of a type of case in which this specific lab analysis would be required. The story helps
students relate the skills they are learning to
actual crime scene analysis. The technical
background explains the science behind the techniques used in the laboratory experiment. Students assume the role of investigative scientists and apply real-world techniques to solve the mystery.
Each kit in the series may be purchased individually or together as a convenient, cost-saving bundle. Your students may even discover that the crimes are connected... or are they? Find out and have fun while learning with the Flinn Forensic Files Student Laboratory Kits!

Flinn Forensic Files—Ballistics
By: The Flinn Staff
Marty Higgins has just experienced one of the most
terrifying nights of her life! First she walks in to find her home being burglarized and then has a gun fired in her direction! Police have found an abandoned warehouse that they believe has been used by three potential suspects for target practice. By using simulated bullet holes, footprints, and trigonometry, students calculate the height of the three suspects. This information is then compared to the calculated height of the shooter in Marty Higgins’ home to determine if the same person who burglarized her home had been practicing shooting skills in the warehouse. Kit includes a tape measure, three copies of each of the three bullet holes, and three copies of each of the three footprints.
Complete for nine groups of students. One tape measure is included for activity set up. Additional tape measures are required and available separately.
Flinn Forensic Files—DNA Verification
By: The Flinn Staff
DNA is the most conclusive form of evidence to
confirm a suspect’s presence at the scene of the crime. Police have narrowed down a list of suspects they think may have committed a series of crimes in the Charleston, SC area. Students run the DNA of three suspects against evidence that was collected from the crime scene to determine the identity of the guilty party.
Complete for six student groups. Electrophoresis chamber, power supply and gel trays are required but not included.
