Viruses and Epidemiology, continued
The Epidemic—
Super Value Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
How is an epidemic started? Can it be stopped? Students simulate the movement of a deadly pathogen as they become “world travelers .” How easily will it travel from one international city to another when students simply shake hands? An excellent simulation to illustrate the importance of good hygiene . It is also a safe alternative compared to the traditional acid/base indicator pathogen-simulation labs . Background information about the field of epidemiology, a step-by-step procedure, student worksheets, overheads, and complete Instructor’s Notes are provided .
Super Value Kit includes enough materials for 150 students! An ultra violet light is needed.
Outbreak: A Study in Epidemiology—
Super Value Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students become Center for Disease Control scientists as they uncover the source of a serious epidemic in a school . The scenario takes advantage of one of the most familiar and contagious school diseases— conjunctivitis (pinkeye) . The students first provide a hypothesis and then use the same analytical methods that epidemiologists use to test their hypothesis . Students calculate the prevalence, the risk of infec- tion, and the relative risk of infection for the students in the school scenario . Includes informative background information on the field of epidemiology, step-by-step procedures, student worksheets, and Instructor’s Notes .
Super Value Kit is complete for 10 student groups. All the materials are completely reusable.

Super Value Laboratory Kit

Cornell High School, Cornell, WI
Doctors are trained to recognize the signs and symptoms of numer- ous diseases . Many diseases have common symptoms, which make it difficult to distinguish one from another . In addition, patients are sometimes afflicted with more than one ailment at a time . In this lab, students become real-world physicians . As the doctor, each student performs an initial patient screening to gather preliminary data of the patient’s symptoms . Based on the background information provided in the activity, it is up to the doctor to determine the appropriate follow- up questions to ask and which tests to perform in order to accurately diagnose the patient’s condition from a list of 35 possible diseases .
Complete for 30 students working in groups of three. All materials are completely reusable.
