AIDS: Simulation of HIV-1 Detection
This experiment is a simulation of screening for antibodies against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) . Enzyme-linked immunosor- bent assay (ELISA) is currently used as an initial clinical screening of the blood supply for HIV-1 . Students use simulated HIV antigen as they follow the steps used in clinical labs for ELISA screening of HIV-1 . This experiment does not use human or other blood . Ten sets of ELISA reactions are provided . Some components require refrigerator or freezer storage and will be shipped separately . Kit is supplied with a redemp- tion coupon for these items . Please order from redemption coupon 2–3 weeks in advance of lab .
AIDS Testing Simulation—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Many laboratory procedures have been designed to detect the presence of antibodies and the interactions between antigens and antibodies . One such test, ELISA—Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay—has received popular notice recently due to its use in detecting AIDS-infected individuals . In this simulation of the ELISA test procedure, students identify infected individuals while learning the principles involved in the ELISA test procedure .
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. No human blood or blood products are used in this experiment.
A Molecular Approach to
Understanding the HIV
By: William Humphries
Richardson High School, Richardson, TX
A comprehensive module on the molecular biology of the HIV virus . Students build their own RNA and DNA models, develop a hands-on understanding of how genetic information is transmitted in biologi- cal systems, and learn how RNA is reverse transcribed to DNA by retroviruses .
The kit contains enough materials for six student groups building models at once . Over 2,500 pop beads are included in the model materials . The comprehensive instructor’s guide is in loose-leaf note- book form to allow for easy copying of student pages and teaching transparencies covering the basics of the human immune system and the molecular biology of the HIV virus .
