Constructing Model Viruses—
Student Activity Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Despite their role in common infections, viruses appear to be alien life forms, with cage-like, helical, and spaceship-like shapes . Explore the biological niche of viruses by building model viruses and investigat- ing their biochemical make-up . Students construct two virus models using sturdy cardstock, one from each of the two main viral types, and relate the shape, structure, and genome composition of viruses to their function . Using the information provided in the activity, they calculate the length of RNA or DNA in each virus and scale the genome propor- tionally to the size of the model . Inserting the model genome into the virus model completes the model and shows how simple, yet complex, a virus is .
Complete for 30 students to each make both types of viruses.
West Nile Virus Transmission—
Super Value Game
By: The Flinn Staff
The vector-borne disease, West Nile Virus, began in Uganda and was first documented in the United States in New York City . It has since spread to every state across the country . Depending on the organisms infected, some species can be virtually eliminated by the disease while others remain largely unaffected . In this interactive game, students assume the role of a disease vector or host . They witness first-hand how vector-borne diseases spread and the ways they can affect entire ecosystems .
Super value game is complete for 30 students. All materials including laminated cards and dry erase markers are reusable, making this game a great value!
AIDS—Transfer of Body Fluids—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
A graphic and exciting activity that is sure to provoke discussion! Students simulate the exchange of body fluids as a means of spread- ing the HIV virus . Use this kit to initiate a discussion about the transmission of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases or any communicable infection . The instructor is able to affect the degree of spreading simply by altering the number of students initially “infected .” The striking results are indicated by an unmistakable color change . NO ACTUAL BODY FLUIDS ARE USED . This will be one of your most exciting class periods of the year .
Materials are provided based on a class size of 35 students. Enough chemicals are provided to conduct the tests 15 times.
