Forensics—Blood Evidence, continued
Forensic Glow—Blood System
Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
You arrive at the crime scene, a murder has occurred. Bloodstains should be present but can’t be seen. How can you determine if and where the blood is located? In this activity, a simulated blood sample will be detected using a chemiluminescent blood detection solution similar to the type used by actual forensic scientists! As the blood detection solution comes in contact with simulated blood, a bright blue glow appears. An excellent inexpensive activity that may be used alone or added to your current forensics unit. Includes detailed instructions and enough materials to perform the activity over 50 times. No blood or blood products are used.
Concepts: Forensics, chemiluminescence, bloodstain patterns.
Time Required: 15 minutes
Materials Provided: Luminescent blood detection solution, hydrogen peroxide, simulated blood sample.
Who Cheated in the Race? Red Blood
Cell Volume Forensic Laboratory Kit
By: Diane Sweeney
Punahou School, Honolulu, HI
The bicycle race is over and the top three finishers have been accused of cheating by blood-doping, a means of artificially increasing the number of red blood cells in the body. Students become real-world lab technicians as they analyze red blood cell volumes in simulated blood samples. Students conduct a hematocrit of several simulated blood samples and compare their data with other groups’ test results. Critical- thinking and cooperative-learning skills are developed as together students analyze data and draw a conclusion—did any of the cyclists cheat? Includes complete instructions with reproducible student hand- outs, detailed background information, and valuable Teacher Notes.
Complete for 15 groups of students. Activity is a chemical simulation and contains no actual blood or blood products.

Kastle-Meyer Presumptive Blood
Testing—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students feel like authentic crime scene investigators when they test for the presence of real blood! Four evidence samples, that may contain blood, are taken from a crime scene. Students perform the Kastle-Meyer test on each sample as a presumptive test to determine if further examination is needed. Learn about the benefits and limita- tions of presumptive blood testing to ignite further curiosity about forensic testing.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Approximately 20 mL of real blood are required, but not included. This can be obtained from a local butcher.
