Anatomy and Physiology— Respiratory System Study Kits
Exercise, CO2 and Respiration—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: Diane Sweeney, Punahou School, Honolulu, HI
Exercise your students’ bodies—and their minds—to discover the essen- tial relationship between breathing and cellular respiration! Students determine the relative amount of carbon dioxide in exhaled air before and after exercise using an acid–base indicator. Which sample contains a greater concentration of CO2? How and why do athletes train to increase their breathing efficiency? Students will answer these questions and explore the complex biofeedback mechanism by which the body uses the production of CO2 and pH to regulate breathing.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs.
Lung Model—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students can construct their own working lung model
with this hands-on set of materials. They will demonstrate for them- selves how differential air pressure causes inspiration and expiration of air from the lungs. Plastic cups, rubber stoppers, and balloons are used to simulate body parts making the model nearly indestructible. The simple design will assure that all students are successful in their construction project. Detailed instructions and background information are provided.
Complete with enough materials for 30 working lung models.
Breathing Fitness Lab
After working through the activities in this kit, your students will know their respiratory systems inside and out. They will measure and experi- ment with breathing rates, breath volume, lung volume, breath control, and the amount of CO2 in exhaled air. Students will gain a better under- standing of how breathing and respiration relate to fitness and exercise, howthe parameters they measure correlate with height and weight, and the potential consequences of lung damage.
This complete laboratory module includes the Breath Control Gauge, Lung Volume Bag, Breath Volume Bag, mouthpieces, meter tape, chemicals, wall charts for recording and displaying class data, and a comprehensive instructor’s packet with several activity plans. The Lung Volume Bag and the Breath Control Gauge are also listed separately in this section.
Lung Bag Activity
Are your students full of “hot air”? Here is your chance to find out just how much “hot air” those kids really have. The lung volume bag set allows students to measure lung capacity, while also being able to see if there is a relationship between lung capacity and a person’s height. Guaranteed fun with this activity! Set contains:
• 4 Bags • 4 Rubber Bands
• 4 Mouthpieces • 1 Instruction Manual • 4 Mouthpiece Holders
