Mr. Mathematics Mysterious Murder— Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Matthew Mathematics, the math teacher at Mammals Middle School, was mysteriously murdered on Monday morning. When the body was discovered, the police were called and the crime scene investigation team was sent. Explore the fascinating science of criminal investigations with this scenario-based lab. Students gather evidence at the simulated crime scene set up by the teacher and return to the “Forensics Lab” to analyze the evidence. Forensic tests include fiber analysis, shoeprints, blood, stomach contents, and fingerprints. After analyzing all the evidence, identify the cause of death and identify the suspect. Kit includes repro- ducible student handouts, detailed background information, complete instructor notes with sample data and answers to all questions, and all chemicals and consumables supplies needed to perform the labs.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Microscopes are needed for fiber analysis.
Food Analysis Mystery— Forensic Laboratory Kit By: The Flinn Staff
Teach chemical test procedures for common foods—Vitamin C, starches, reducing sugars, fats and proteins—in the context of a murder mystery! Students start by performing the chemical tests to establish the “standards” for positive identification, so critical to forensic science. Once the standards are established, the stomach contents of the victims are tested for the presence of the foods. When the test results are recorded, the data are examined in an attempt to solve the mystery. The kit includes the chemicals, student activities and instructor information.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
Forensic Groundwater Contamination— Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
A rancher drills a well on the outskirts of a rural community and submits a sample for analysis. A potentially serious pollutant is found. The student’s assignment is to determine the extent of the pollutant’s spread and to pinpoint its source so the community can assess and remedy the problem. In the process the students will select test well sites, “analyze” samples from the selected wells, map the extent and concentration levels of the pollutant, and submit proposals for addressing the problem.
Complete for 30 students working in groups of three. Consumables are easily replaced for indefinite use.
Stream Contamination— Forensic Laboratory Kit By: The Flinn Staff
A massive fish kill has occurred in the town of Raymond. The towns- people are in an uproar, and extensive efforts are underway to determine why the fish are dying. It is up to your students to take the role of forensic scientists and determine who is responsible. Students will use nitrate and phosphate tests to determine the culprit. Use this great problem-based learning activity to build student interest and let them see how science is used in everyday life. A variety of possible scenarios are presented, and the outcome may be changed from class to class. Includes extensive back- ground information and all the testing materials needed to crack the case.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
