Order Live Materials
Catalog numbers with an LM prefix are live materials.
Please order live materials separately from other products found in this Catalog/Reference Manual. This will ensure prompt delivery of your order.
Please specify on your purchase order the date you want the live materials to arrive. If no date is specified, your order will be shipped immediately. Orders received during the summer months will not be shipped unless a delivery date is specified.
To assure that cultures are tended to promptly, the name of the instructor or lab manager who is to receive the live materials must be shown on the order.
Live material orders are generally shipped on Mondays and Tuesdays. Normal delivery time is 2–3 days. Please allow ample time for proper handling of your order.
Please prepare culture media ahead of the requested arrival date of the live material.

Redworms
Eisenia foetida. The number-one worm of choice for vermicompost- ing—the art of employing worms to convert garbage into rich, organic fertilizer. A state permit is required to ship to Utah. Not available for Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
★MAINTENANCE: Redworms are common in manure piles, compost piles, and in soils with high levels of organic material. They love garbage and love to turn it into compost. Worm bins can be maintained right in the laboratory since, when properly maintained, they are completely odorless.
Nematodes—Eels
The roundworms. Turbatrix aceti (also called Anguillula aceti) is the common laboratory specimen from this group. Known as the “vinegar eel” because it is usually found living in the sediment of unpasteurized vinegar where it feeds on bacteria and fungi. As primary consumers, nematodes are a vital link in numerous natural systems. ★MAINTENANCE: Maintain vinegar eels in moderate light at room temperature, in virtually any kind of glass or plastic container. Culture in apple cider vinegar (200 mL or more) to which a few cubes of apple have been added.
Planaria
The common freshwater representative of the phylum Platyhel minthes—the flatworms. The phylum also includes the medically important parasitic tapeworms and flukes. The flatworms are of anatomical interest for two primary reasons—the development of three distinct germ layers (ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm), and as examples of the acoelomates (animals lacking a body cavity). Planaria has been widely studied for its regenerative capacity, its response to basic stimuli, and for simple learning experiments. A state permit is required to ship to Alaska and Hawaii.
★MAINTENANCE: Maintain Planaria in dim, diffuse light at 20–22 °C, in a shallow tray or culture dish. Culture in filtered pond or spring water. Feed once a week with pea-sized portions (one piece per 50 Planarians) of fresh beef liver or hard-boiled egg yolk. Remove uneaten food after one or two hours.
Rotifers
Also known as “wheel animalcules” because of the ring of cilia surrounding the mouth. Common inhabitants of fresh water from lakes, ditches and puddles. Transparent, so that internal anatomy can be examined in the living organism, several species have rings in their outer body covering giving the false impression of being segmented. Hardy and active, they are fascinating to observe.
★MAINTENANCE: Maintain Rotifers in culture dishes, in moderate light at room temperature. Culture in wheat seed infusion medium which has been prepared and left uncovered 48–72 hours. Supplement with a green algae, such as Chlorella or Chlamydomonas.
