  Build a Model Heart—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Build a functioning heart model! The heart acts as the “pump” of the cardiovascular system. Pressure created in the heart drives blood throughout the entire circulatory system. Balloons, rubber tubing and adjustable plastic clamps are used to construct this hands-on and highly visual model. Pressure is applied to the chambers and the clamps are manipulated to show students how blood flows through the heart itself to the rest of the body. Includes materials to build six model hearts, extensive background information, student worksheets with answers and valuable Instructor Notes.
Complete for 6 student groups.
Physiology of the Circulatory System—
Super Value Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
How are blood pressure, heart rate, and exercise related? What is the baroreceptor response? Explore the human circulatory system’s response to exercise in this very “active” student laboratory kit. Engaged students gain experience using a stethoscope and sphygmo- manometer as they measure their blood pressure and heart rate while at rest, while reclining, and after exercise. They then learn how these different measurements are combined to evaluate relative cardiac fitness. Background information provides a thorough explanation of blood pressure, heart rate, and the baroreceptor response. Future health professionals will gain valuable knowledge of human physiology as well as practical experience. Includes 10 stethoscopes, a sphygmo- manometer, student worksheets, background information, detailed procedures, and comprehensive Instructor Notes.
Super Value Kit is complete for 10 student groups. All materials are reusable.
Investigating Heart Rate—
Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Get those hearts beating! Resting heart rate, maximum heart rate, target heart rate—what do all these numbers mean? How are these heart rates determined? In this completely reusable demonstration, three student volunteers perform fitness activities while three other volunteers use a stethoscope to measure heart rate at specific times. Discuss how activ- ity affects heart rate. Make this a larger activity with the purchase of additional stethoscopes.
Concepts: Heart rate, cardiology.
Time Required: 25 minutes
Materials Provided: Three stethoscopes, isopropyl alcohol, cotton balls.
