Counting Simulated Red Blood Cells Using a Hemocytometer—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Add insight to students’ understanding of the role of clinical lab tests in diagnosing diseases! A hemocytometer is an instrument used in medi- cal settings to manually count cells. In this experiment, students use hemocytometers to count red blood cells (RBCs) in a simulated blood sample. Each hemocytometer has two chambers with one counting grid per chamber. Simulated blood cells are counted under a microscope and the concentration of RBCs per cubic centimeter of blood is calculated to determine the blood count. Students learn about normal RBC counts and the types of diseases that are indicated when the counts are high or low. Kit contains 10 disposable hemocytometers and materials and instructions to prepare more than 1 L of simulated blood.
Complete for 30 students working in groups of three.
ABO Blood Typing—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students determine their own blood type while learning the basics of ABO blood grouping. Background information is provided about the mechanisms involved in ABO blood typing as well as the genetics of ABO blood types.
Complete for 50 students and ready to use. Lyophilized sera, no refrigeration necessary.
ABO/Rh Blood Typing—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students can fully characterize their own blood with this complete blood typing kit. All materials are included and the activity can be completed in a single class period. Detailed instructions include safety considerations, genetics of blood types, transfusion considerations, and details of blood typing mechanisms.
Complete for 50 students and ready to use. Lyophilized sera, no refrigeration necessary.
Blood Typing Sera, Anti-A, Anti-B and Anti-Rh
Specially prepared for the instructor who has all materials on hand to conduct blood typing, but only needs the serum. Includes 5 mL of each antiserum, enough serum for 75 tests. Lyophilized sera, no refrigeration required.
