Enzymes—The Catalysts of Life—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
The activities in this kit will provide excellent first-hand experiences studying the actions of enzymes. Activities include the examination of a digestive enzyme reaction; the measurement of the effect of enzyme concentration on reaction rate; the effect of temperature on reaction rate; and the effect of pH on reaction rate. After initial data is collected, students are encouraged to design their own experiments to explore other variables in enzyme reactions. Includes detailed student instruc- tions and valuable Instructor’s Notes.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs.
Enzyme Optimization—pH and Temperature Guided-Inquiry Kit By: The Flinn Staff
Lab isn’t always about getting the “right” answer; it’s also about learning to think. The purpose of this inquiry-based lab is to analyze background information, develop a hypothesis, and design and carry out an experi- ment to determine the optimum pH or temperature for an enzyme. Kit includes four digestive enzymes—amylase, lipase, pepsin, and tryp- sin—along with the appropriate buffers and testing solutions to test the progress or products of their respective digestion reactions. Students design individual experiments to find optimum conditions for a particu- lar enzyme. Students compare results and draw general conclusions about the nature of enzymes and how they work. Pre-lab preparation built into the activity will help students plan their tests. Includes sample data. This is a great activity to help students develop critical-thinking and logical-reasoning skills.
Complete for 24 students working in groups of 4.
Catalase Investigation—
Guided-Inquiry Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Let students design their own controlled experiments and discover the factors that affect the rate of enzyme reactions. The laboratory investi- gations in this kit allow students to conduct experiments of their own design while studying the chemical reactions of a key cell enzyme, catalase. The unique “floating-disk” assay system will provide a new and fun alternative for your students as they study enzyme kinetics.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
Enzyme Catalysis Model—
Super Value Laboratory Kit
By: Debbie Richards, Bryan High School, Bryan, TX
Students use this teacher-developed set of materials to design and build their own working model of a functioning enzyme. The polyethylene foam used in this activity allows the flexibility needed to make a work- ing enzyme/substrate model. The materials are easy to cut and modify to show the active site and the major concepts of competitive and noncompetitive enzyme inhibition. Building the models and making them work will provide a hands-on way to teach very abstract concepts.
Super Value Kit is complete for 30 students working in pairs. Enough foam material is provided for additional student experimentation and design. All materials are reusable!
