Lactose Intolerance—Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Intestinal gas—not a very pleasant thought! Gas can
be a big problem for those who lack the enzymes to
digest certain foods. Do products that advertise to eliminate this prob- lem really work? This demonstration kit shows an over-the-counter enzyme LactaidTM (lactase) in action! Flasks containing various sugar combinations with and without LactaidTM are compared for gas produc- tion by yeast cells. Balloons inflate very quickly when digestible sugars are available to the lactose intolerant yeast cells. Inflated and non- inflated balloons dramatically illustrate the concept and consequences for students. Enough materials are provided in this kit to perform the demonstration seven times.
Concepts: Enzymes, disaccharides, monosaccharides.
Time Required: One class period
Materials Provided: Baker’s yeast, galactase, glucose, balloons, LactaidTM tablets, lactose.
Chemicals of Life—
Super Value Laboratory Kit By: David Brock
Roland Park Country School, Baltimore, MD
Give students their initial experience in the chemistry of living matter by having them identify the basic macromolecules of the cell. This teacher-designed activity can be used as an introduction to biochemis- try or any cell unit and will also serve as an excellent first experience to the proper protocols for performing chemical tests. Students will learn and perform standard tests for carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids.
Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs. Perform this experimemt in a fume hood or wellventilated lab.
Properties of Biological Buffers—
Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
General, Organic and Biological Chemistry
Many chemical reactions in living organisms take place at neutral pH values. How do cells maintain the delicate pH balance required for life and health? Buffers! A buffer protects against rapid changes in pH when acids or bases are added to it. All living cells contain a natural buffer system to maintain the constant pH needed for proper cell function. Students will learn all about how buffers work by examining a model carbonate blood buffer and phosphate cell buffers.
Complete for 24 students working in pairs.
Cholesterol Determination of Simulated Blood— Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Conduct a completely safe laboratory investigation to determine human cholesterol levels. Simulated blood of five different individuals will be tested before and after treatment for cholesterol. The test results will provide insight into the succesess and failures of basic cholesterol- lowering treatments. Students will learn that cholesterol is a real paradox—everyone needs it, but too much of a good thing can spell trouble for some people. The components in this cholesterol simulation are safe and contain no actual blood products.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
