Analysis of Over-the-Counter Drugs—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Learn to analyze and identify over-the-counter (OTC) drugs includ- ing popular pain relievers such as aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, Bufferin®, and Excedrin® and common antacids. Students test a variety of physical and chemical properties of actual OTC drug samples and then use their test results to analyze unknown pain reliever and antacid samples. Instructor notes and reproducible student handouts included. Over-the-counter drug samples—pain relievers and antacids—and specialized equipment are provided in the kit. Fifteen 24-well reaction plates are needed and may be purchased separately.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
Using Bacteria to Clean Clothes? Genetic Engineering in Action— Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Creating organisms that have never existed on Earth is not just science fiction! Today, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are used in many ways to benefit mankind, from making insulin to improving detergents. In this easy-to-use kit, students investigate whether deter- gents that list GMO-derived enzymes as ingredients will “clean clothes” better than detergents that might not contain enzymes. The detergents are tested by comparing their effectiveness at digesting proteins (gela- tin). In addition, many suggestions are included for turning this lab into a cooperative class project by assigning different variables to each group for testing.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs. Balances with 0.1g precision, hot plate(s) and pH paper or handheld pH meters are required, but not included.
Juicing Enzymes—Enzymes Used in the Food Industry— Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Enzymes are complex proteins that act as biochemical catalysts. In this controlled experiment, students investigate the effects of two enzymes, pectinase and cellulase, on the amount of juice obtained from an apple. Pectinase breaks down pectin—part of the polysaccharide cell wall in fruits—and dramatically improves juice production. This very “natu- ral” experiment will help students build connections between the basic principles of enzyme action, including optimum pH and temperature, and real-life applications in food science and food production. Kit includes reproducible student handouts, detailed background infor- mation, complete Instructor’s Notes with sample data and answers to all questions, and all chemicals and consumable supplies needed to perform the lab.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. A 0.1g precision balance and apples are required but not provided.
