Boyle’s Law in a Bottle—
Super Value Laboratory Kit

Learn Boyle’s Law in a safe and environmentally friendly manner! More than 350 years ago, Robert Boyle used trapped air in a glass tube above a column of mercury to study the relationship between the volume and pressure of air. In this activity, students carry out a modern version of Boyle’s classic determination using only a syringe and a special, “pressurized” soda bottle. The airtight soda bottle is fitted with a tire valve and has a sealed syringe inside. Students use a pump to increase the pressure of the air inside the soda bottle, forcing the volume of the gas in the syringe to decrease. Students record the change in volume of the air in the syringe as they release measured amounts of pressure from the soda bottle. Students graph the pressure versus volume and discover the inverse relationship between the two. Includes eight sets of pressure bottles and syringes, along with reproducible student handouts, detailed background information and complete Instructor’s Notes with sample data and answers to all questions.
Complete for eight groups of students. A tire pump and pressure gauges are required and available separately.

Carbon Dioxide—What a Gas!

Generate microscale quantities (50–60 mL) of carbon dioxide gas in syringes and observe the properties and reactions of the gas. Perform the classic limewater test for the detection of CO2, observe the acidic nature of the gas, watch the gas undergo a chemical reaction and determine if carbon dioxide supports combustion of a candle flame. Students gain a hands-on understanding of the chemistry of carbon dioxide. Includes Instructor’s Notes, reproducible student handouts and all necessary chemicals and specialized materials.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. The Chemistry of Gases Classroom Equipment Kit (AP5951) is needed to perform this lab and available separately below.
Hydrogen—What a Bang!
Student Laboratory Kit

Safely observe the explosive nature of hydrogen gas! Generate microscale amounts (50–60 mL) of hydrogen gas in syringes. Perform the classic candle test for the detection of H2, ignite bubbles filled with pure hydrogen and compare them to bubbles filled with mixtures of hydrogen and air, and determine whether H2 burns in the absence of air. Includes Instructor’s Notes, reproducible student handouts and all necessary chemicals and specialized materials.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. The Chemistry of Gases Classroom Equipment Kit (AP5951) is needed to perform this lab and is available separately.
